Restoration Process
Full rebuild project....
The tractor is fully dismantled to empty castings, i.e, empty rear axle and transmission castings e.t.c.
All internal and external parts are examined thoroughly for wear and tear and for any problems which may have occurred due to use/age.
All parts that are required are then sourced and ordered. All machining that is necessary is undertaken, for example crank shafts will be reground, cylinder heads skimmed and so on.
Now the tractor can start to be rebuilt. Firstly the rear axle , that is the crown wheel and pinion, trumpet housings, with new bearings, seals and brakes e.t.c. Then the transmission is rebuilt using new seals and bearings as required. Next will be a full new clutch including bearings. The engine can now start to be rebuilt i.e piston liners, valve guides and shells e.t.c. Fuel injection is next on the long list involving full reconditioning of the injection pump and injectors .
The tractor is built up temporarily to test all the work carried out so far.
Sandblasting the chassis and all ancillaries and tin work are next on the agenda. At BJ Tractors we use a fine plastic bead to get the smooth quality finish required before the spray painting can begin. The 1st step is to apply four coats of zinc phosphate primer and then two coats of cellulose primer to give a good base for a showroom glass like finish using original Massey Ferguson synthetic paints. All the ancillaries and tin work can now be started and built up including wiring loom and cooling system parts, tin work refitted, wheels with new tyres (customer choice of tyre welcome). Next all lights are fitted, then into the final stages with the transfers being applied and last but not least the attention to detail, new grease nipples, linch pin chains and yellow zinc parts which would been fitted to the original At this stage all that is left is the spit and polish and lots of admiring. Sounds easy doesn’t it? I wish!
